1 in 5 French Restaurants Has No Website: What We Found Analyzing 1,600 Establishments

In March and April 2026, we analyzed 1,600 independent restaurants across 38 French cities to answer a simple question: how many actually have an online presence suited to their business? The results are striking — and reveal a massive missed opportunity for thousands of establishments.

Methodology

Data was collected via the Google Places API on independent restaurants in 38 French cities, from Paris to Pau, from Lille to Toulon. For each establishment, we recorded the presence or absence of a website, and the type of solution used when a site existed.

Three profiles were identified:

  • Profile A — no real website: only a Google Maps listing, Instagram account, Facebook page or third-party reservation platform (Zenchef, Eatbu, The Fork)
  • Profile B — generic CMS site: Wix, WordPress, Squarespace or equivalent, not designed specifically for restaurants
  • Profile C — custom or agency-built site

The Results

18% of French restaurants have no website at all

Of the 1,600 establishments analyzed, 282 (18%) have no website. Their online presence is limited to a Google listing, an Instagram account or a Facebook page. Some use a third-party reservation platform like The Fork or Zenchef to host their menu — but these solutions belong to a third party and do not constitute an independent website.

This is a significant finding: nearly one in five restaurants is virtually invisible to users searching online.

45% use a generic CMS not suited to restaurants

715 restaurants (45%) chose WordPress, Wix or Squarespace. These platforms allow for an online presence, but they are not designed for the specific constraints of a restaurant: real-time menu updates, integrated QR codes, local search optimization, structured schema.org markup.

A Wix site built three years ago with an outdated PDF menu is technically “a website” — but it does little for local SEO or customer experience.

Only 38% have a truly adapted site

603 establishments (38%) have a custom site built by an agency or developer. This is often the highest-performing option — but also the most expensive, starting around €2,000 and creating ongoing dependency on the provider for any changes.

Geographic Disparities

The gaps between cities are striking.

The gap between Toulon (42% without a website) and Lille (0%) illustrates the uneven pace of digital adoption in French restaurants. Major northern cities, with a more digitally connected business and tourist clientele, seem to have better integrated the importance of a web presence.

The Real Cost of Having No Website

A restaurant without a website isn’t just “invisible online.” It misses very concrete opportunities:

Local SEO: Google prioritizes establishments with a website in organic search results. A Google Business Profile alone can help appear in the local pack (top 3 on Maps), but not in the organic results where competition is less fierce.

Credibility: multiple consumer studies show that over 70% of internet users check a restaurant’s website before visiting. The absence of a site can be interpreted as a lack of professionalism, or a sign that the establishment may have closed.

Online menu: customers want to see the menu before deciding. A restaurant whose menu is not accessible online loses a share of spontaneous reservations.

QR code: a QR code linked to a proprietary domain (your-restaurant.com/menu) is permanent and professional. A QR code linked to a third-party platform may change or disappear if you leave the service.

An Untapped Opportunity

These figures show that the majority of independent restaurant owners have not yet seized the full potential of a proper online presence. The good news: solutions have evolved. It is no longer necessary to hire a web agency or know how to code to have a professional website, optimized for local search, with a dynamic menu and integrated QR code.

Platforms like Resto1.Click now allow you to create a complete site in under ten minutes, with no setup fee and an affordable monthly subscription. The goal: make the real barrier neither cost nor technical complexity, but simply the decision to get started.
